Prison land offered to prior owners
Waikune Prison land may be back in the hands of its original owners by early next year. The land, which does not include the prison complex itself, is planted in douglas fir and pinus radiata. The value of the land is $115,000 and the trees, $218,034. A list of the original owners of the land, blocks 4A1A, 4A2, 4A3 and 4A4, has finally been compiled by Department of Survey and Land Information officers. Once addresses were found those people would be notified of the offer-back. Following a meeting with those previous owners and the Justice Department, the owners have 40 days to consider the offer. The prison complex may yet be used for wharewananga purposes.
