Second win for young speaker
Sally Williams from Orautoha won the interschool speech contest for the second year running. Ten students from Raetihi, Ohakune, National Park and Orautoha took part in the Ruapehu Lions Inter-primary school speech contest at the Raetihi school on 7 October. The students performed a two to three minute prepared speech of their own choice and then a 90 second impromptu speech on 'Little brother and sisters'
For her prepared speech Sally spoke on 'Kiwi Slang'. Tineke Edwards (National Park) speaking on The Amazing Human Body' was second and Anaru Mareikura speaking on 'Billy T James' was third. There was a wide range of subjects for the prepared speeches from 'Going to Boarding School' to The State of the Earth in 10 years time' and 'Advertising'. Judges for the evening were Valma Littlewood, Ruapehu International T r a i n i n g i n Communications, We-
ston Kirton, Deputy Mayor of the Ruapehu District Council and the Reverend Bob Peck. Speaking on behalf of the judges Weston Kirton commented on the excellent standard of the speeches. He also advised the speakers to
look at their audience, to use humour where possible and to finish their speeches with a message for the audience. Sally Williams will represent the Ruapehu district in the regional finals in November.
