Mayor underpaid, say councillors
Ruapehu Mayor Garrick Workman is underpaid, at $40,000 per annum plus expenses, according to most councillors. The council discussed members' remunerations at their last meeting, and decided to set the mayor' s salary at its present $40,000 (which is the maximum allowable), the deputy mayor's at $10,000, Hearings Committee chairman at $5500 (including $3000 as councillor salary) councillors at $3000, community board chairpersons $2500 and community board members at zero. The meeting allowance for councillors and community board members remains at $85 per meeting. Mayor Workman thanked councillors for their statements but said he believed it would be unpopular to increase the mayoral salary even if it could be. Cr Eddie Turley said councillors could always write the mayor a cash cheque if they felt he was underpaid. As to councillor's earnings, Cr Turley said he would be happy to look any ratepayer in the eye and say he was happy to accept the salary. "No-one here is over-paid," he said.
