Money for weeds

The council budget for reserves maintenance should be over-spent by $750 to allow for the purchase of spray for Old Man's Beard, the Waimarino Community Board has recommended. The weed has been cut back in various places around the Waimarino by Rotary Club volunteers, and now needs spraying to stop regrowth. The board heard there was no money in the budget to pay for the spraying and an overspending by that amount would have to be requested. Roadside weeds The council sprays roadside weeds for road safety reasons and not necessarily to control weeds, the board heard last week. Council general manager Cliff Houston said where the council had a legal obligation to spray weeds on its own land it would do so. Board members expressed concern that weeds on land that was not the responsibility of any adjacent landowner, were being ignored. Mr Oliver cited weeds on land between roads and rivers in the Waimarino. Mr Houston invited members to let him know of problem areas and he would follow up the matter.
