"Klansmen" gear up for around the mountains relay

A group of Waiouru men and women will run around the mountain in relay to raise money for the Waiouru Primary School. The relay team is called Klansmen and their aim is to raise as much money as possible for school funds. The team, on the advice of the Board of Trustees and teachers, will have the

final decision on what to purchase for the school. Mr Morgan, the school principal organised a hangi lunch for all the runners and supporters to show his gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the school. "It is to better our children's educational future," said Mr Morgan. This is the second year the team has competed. Last year the team made $3,000 and bought a

video camera and accessories. This year the team aim is $4,000. Each individual has arranged their own sponsorship. Willie Walker, the co-ordinator has written to community businesses, clubs, and messes asking for donations. The following services have been donated. Serco, has donated a caravan and Bar B Que for the day; Caltex Garage, have donated uniforms, and will refuel the shuttle vehicles on the day; The Hot Bread shop and RSA, are providing transport; Mitrax

disco, offer free service for one night; and the RSA, will support any fundraising activity at the Club, by topping up the total to $500. Each runner will run 5 miles officially, but can run ten miles if they wish. There will be four food stops at various points around the mountain, and two vehicles that will stay with each runner. There will also be a shuttle van to transport runners to check points. "This is for our school and our kids. All contributions are appreciated,"

said Willie Walker. The runners are; Tania Paul, Juanita Brausch, Kura Flavell, Kevin Gosnell, Denise Neho, Rose Hill, Darcy Gilbert, Marion Oliver, Pat Mclnerney, Jo Howie, Julie Brownlie, Chris Hemmingsen, Rex Tuiono, Rod MacKinnon, Willie Brayton, Maureen Price, Robbie Paul, Nina Waru, Phil Harris, Emjay Brown, Willie Walker, Fran Reihana, Stannella Ngawera. The support team are; Wendy Newman, Heather King, Heather Kett, Tracey Herewini, Noeline Mascoe, Gus Beattie, Bud Abbott, Pedro Barns.
