Missing skier found at hut
Local search and rescue volunteers and the Turoa Ski Patrol mounted a search for a missing skier at about 5.30pm on Sunday night after his companion raised the alarm that he was missing. The man, 23, from Palmerston North, was found at about 9.30-10. 00pm at the Mangaturuturu Hut, below the western slopes of Turoa Ski Fields. He was not familiar with the area but managed to find his own way to the round-the-mountain track and then to the hut by about 5.30pm. Two of the S&R team who found him stayed with him at the hut and they all walked out yesterday moming. Conservation officer Rob McCallum, who had traversed around from the skifield base area with another searcher, said the man's tracks were found less than 400 metres from one of the base area buildings. Visibility on the mountain on Sunday was poor for most of the day. Ski Patrol carried out extra sweeps of the slopes to look for the man, while the Waimarino Search and Rescue teams checked huts and tracks.
