Police dog Pedro, from Wanganui, sniffs out Turoa Ski Patrol leader Phil Couch during an avalanche training session for the dog last week, while dog handler Lain Fluit keeps him under control. Phil volunteered to bury himself in snow so Pedro could practise being an avalanche dog. Pedro is a trained police tracking dog, being tried as an avalanche dog for Ruapehu. Conservation officer Rob McCallum said most South Island avalanche dogs are labradors and that he believed Pedro was the first police dog to be tried for such work. Pedro and his handler could be on Ruapehu, flown by helicopter from Wanganui, within 30-45 minutes, he said.
