Rail property stolen
George Lee Hemara, 22, unemployed of Rangataua, pleaded not guilty to a number of theft and endangering transport charges as well as one of possession of an offensive weapon: a butcher's knife and another of behaving in a suspicious manner at the Tangiwai siding. The theft charges included the following railways property: 29 cartons of prime beef strip loins valued at $2,908; three boxes of engineering components valued at $109; two rolls of carpet ($2,299); 10 cases of sterile plastic bags ($887); one package of roofing accessories ($147); two cartons of fruit loaves ($25); four cartons of plastic ware ($566); two cartons of cleaning fluid (75); a further five cartons of fruit loaves ($182); 141 picture frames ($2,627); 16 cartons and five bottles of Muller Thungau wine ($1,379). Total value of the above property amountsto $9,241. The three charges of endangering transport and goods in transit related to leaving insecure the doors of rail wagons and containers. Defendant was remanded to 14 November for a depositions hearing and then to 12 December for a defended hearing. On a separate charge of assault On the proprietor of the Commercial Hotel in Whakatane on 30 November 1989, he was convicted and fined $150, court costs $65. Counsel: Paul Brown.
