Water works finished in Autumn
The Soldier's Road site for the Ohakune water treatment plant will cost. an estimated $ 858,631 which is $230,000 more than the Mangawhero Camp site favoured by the council. Ruapehu mayor Garrick Workman told the public meeting on Wednesday night in Ohakune last week that work would start on the project this summer and would hopefully be completed by the end of summer. He said there had been enough study into the subject and it was now time for action. He said the council was disappointed at the decision by the Department of Conservation against use of the Mangawhero site. Because tenders for design and construction of the plant were not for a specific site, DoC's decision did not affect them, council engineer Peter Jackson has said. Three tenders are to be asked for further work, picked from seven received. These will be put to the December meeting of the council. There are advantages in opting for the Soldier's Road site, according to technical services director Bruce Dobson. In a report to the Waimarino Community Board this week he outlined the advantages: • A new 300mm water main would be laid to the town from the new reservoir in place of the existing 200mm asbestos cement line. • The new line would supply the town from a better point than would a future new line down the Mountain Road from the Mangawhero Camp Ground. • Construction of the reservoir and treatment plant oupide the National Park would enable the work to proceed more easily (provided approval is gained from the owner to use the site).
