Dance group wows College

The highlight of the visit from the combined Woree and Trinity Bay High School to Ruapehu College was the concert presented on Friday 20 September. The Aboriginal and Islander Dance Group from the visiting schools presented dance items from the Torres Strait Islands in the first segment and traditional aboriginal dances in the second segment finishing with a rap segment. The dancing in all segments was very energetic and required a certain amount of audience participation. The near capacity crowd, with only a little standing room left, responded

well and thoroughly appreciated the items presented. The audience was then entertained by the Ruapehu Culture Club who performed items they had presented at a concert in T aihape and at the Wellington Art Gallery and Museum last term. Forty two students and five adults from Woree and Trinity Bay High Schools in Cairns Australia are in New Zealand for 15 days on a combined Cultural and Sporting trip. They have spent the year fund-rais-ing the $32,000 necessary for the trip. While in the Waimarino the students were billeted by Ruapehu Turnpage4

In a tough game of rugby the visitors won 10-0 while the more social game of netball was won 41-20 by Ruapehu College. On Saturday the group moved to Turoa Lodge to spend three days skiing and relaxing, but due to the weather did not get a lot of skiing before heading back to Auckland and home. The Australian group have been finding it cold in New Zealand especially while in Ohakune and it rained all the time they were in New Zealand Before coming to Ohakune the group had played rugby and netball at colleges in Auckland and Rotorua as well as presenting their concert. They won all the rugby but lost the netball.
