NZ Winter Games basketball
BYJOHOWIE Eight basketball teams played in Waiouru
last weekend competing in the New Zealand Winter Games basketball
tournament. There were four women's, and four men's teams. The men's
teams were: Ruapehu from Ohakune, Starlight from Taupo, Magpies from Taumarunui, and Waiouru. The women's teams were: Ruapehu from Ohakune, Kowhai from Taupo, Wanderers from T aumarunui and Waiouru. Andreas Hefti, the Games Director and his wife Yvonne presented the awards to the winning teams. He said he enjoyed the competition but expected there would be more entries next year. He also said he wasn't aware of the fabulous facilities in Waiouru and hoped to use the Waiouru pool next year for a swimming competition as a part of the Winter Games.
Bubs Hibbard, the organiser of the tournament, said 'thankyou' to the Ohakune business people for their wonderful prizes, and the Oasis Hotel for donating wine. She also thanked Major Ashcroft and Foots Brown for their support. Results were: WomenFirst, Waiouru; Second, Kowhai from Taupo; Third, Wanderers from Taumarunui. Top Scorer: S Crack from Waiouru. Most three point shots: S Crack. Most valuable player: Denise Neho. Men- First, Starlight from Taupo; Second, Waiouru; Top Scorer: H Hibbard from. Ruapehu. Most three point shots, P Goldsmith from Starlights. Most valuable player, P Mato from Starlights.
