Cash sought for rugby trip
A Committee of friends and family and members of the Ohakune-Karioi Rugby Club has been set up to raise the necessary funds for Michael Wills' tour with the Rugby News 'New Zealand Youth Team. Many people are under the illusion that the Rugby News sponsors the tour. However they organise the trip and management and, because it is an honour to be selected from Representative teams nationally, selection into the team is much sought after. Michael has already paid the $6,600 needed to cover the cost of the tour but in all cases the Club, friends and family all get behind the project to encourage our up-and-coming young sportsmen and help cover the costs. This amount covers travel, accommodation, breakfast and lunch only.
Michael, who along with younger brother Brendon, is now a member of the Wanganui Colts is looking forward to the month-long tour to the USA, Canada and France under the guidance of coaches Sid Going, Peter Thorbury and manager Peter Goldsmith. The tour organiser is Bob Howitt the rugby journalist. Raffles have been run and a Batons up and hangi has been planned for Thursday 26 September at the Rugby clubrooms, starting at 6pm and a Casino Evening has been organised for Saturday 12 October at the Primary School Hall. Members of the club have yet to organise a wood cutting day to raise funds and the committee is selling bags of potatoes thanks to the generosity of Ron Frew and Sue Joe & Sons. The committee is looking forward to all the support from the locals with these projects.
