Taiaroa picked for Ruapehu
The Ruapehu District community has indicated almost unanimously that it favours Mr Archie Te A Taiaroa's appointment to fill the extraordiriary vacancy left by Councillor Russell Steel on the ManawatuWanganui Regional Council.
This was the view held by Councillor Don Middleton who has consulted with various groups and individuals within the community. The. reasons stated for this were Mr Taiaroa's long experience in local government politics and his high profile in the
community which is respected and has widely acknowledged support. 'The appointment of a successor to Russell has been widely discussed by groups such as Federated Farmers and our local District Council," said Deputy Chairman, Don Middleton. "Maoridom have also indicated their support and would be pleased if he were appointed." Maoridom have also indicated their wish that he remain as Chairman
of Te Roopu Awhina. Mr Taiaroa's appointment had the advantage of his already serving on the Regional Council in his capacity as Chairman of Te Roopu Awhina which means he is automatically part of the Environment and Planning Committee. In voting in favour of the motion that Mr Archie Te A Taiaroa be appointed many councillors stated their appreciation of his service
already to the Council in his capacity as Te Roopu Awhina Chairman. There was only one dissenting vote from Councillor Les Baty to the motion.
His appointment will be confirmed, if after 22 days less than 5 per cent of the Roll seek a byelection.
