It was with anticipation and remembrance of last years brilliant meals that led us back to Turoa Ski Lodge, last week. Last winter Turoa Ski Lodge was "The place" to eat - would it be as good - 1 wondered. The first positive change was the extensive dining room renovations. The dining room now sports a huge blazing fire in the centre of the room, with brightly coloured blinds and a selection of bright prints that cover whole walls. Over a bottle of Rongopai Riesling we peruscd their new menu - which contained the most delightful sounding fare - making the choice a difficult one.
Mr Foodie decided on soup de jour which was thick creamy pumpkin - his favourite. I ordered those trendy potato skins which everyone seems to do - these were the best I'd had. Similar comments on the soup were heard between mouthfuls. After just the right pause our mains arrived. Mr Foodie had ordered another dish from the special black blackboard, fish of the day served with a shrimp sauce - huge shrimps nestled on a generous serving of fish which was pronounced mouth watering.
My rack of lamb was beautifully presented and "fall apart" tender - it received the devine vote from both of us. We settled for a light dessert to share, brandy snaps and fresh fruit - a lovely finale to a scrumptious meal. Our waitress deserves a special mention with friendly helpful service little touches were added and she appeared at regular intervals to top up our drinks - real service. If it was possible to improve on last winter, Turoa Ski Lodge has done it - from the menu, the food and service - an outstanding venue to dine.
