Flood Damage

Ruapehu District Council general manager Cliff Houston reported to Council on a preliminary assessment of flood damage within the District over a period of wet weather from 12 July to 25 August. A full appraisal and report has not yet been completed but in the southern region the two worst affected areas were the Wanganui River Road near Pipiriki and the Makakahi Road off Ohura Road near Raetihi. A preliminary estimate of damage in the southern region is over $100,000. "We had 45 days of rain and we are already $50,000 over budget for the whole District but this won't be a problem if we have a prolonged dry spell," he said. "However if there's another wet period over any length of time we're in trouble." Both the general manager and mayor Garrick Workman said that they wished to publicly thank, on behalf of the Council, Council staff and others throughout the District who had been involved in the clean up and in the attempts to keep the roads open and cleared with staff often having to work in appalling conditions, during this prolonged period of wet weather.
