Caterer's premises clean & safe
A local caterer's premises referred to at the last Waimarino Community Board meeting is not licensed but does not require a licence. Council inspector Colin Turner told the Bulletin that he had inspected the premises, in Ayr Street Ohakune, before they were occupied by Spotless Catering, and found everything in order. He said the building, which was previously used by a farm supplies company, was merely a drop-off point for supplies for the caterers. Only dry goods and the like were stored there and no food preparation was carried out there. Any food items stored in the warehouse remained in the original packaging and were not broken down, he said. A community board
member, John Compton, had expressed concern that the premises were used for food preparation, and were unlicensed. Mr Compton had expressed concern that the premises had previously been used to store agricultural chemicals. Mr Turner said when he inspected the building, before the caterers set up their operation, he found them to be clean and tidy and free of any material from the previous use. He said use of the premises was no different to a truck carrying cartoned dry foods after previously carrying agricultural chemicals. The previous occupiers would have had to take care with spills of poisons etc, because they were also selling animal feeds and remedies, he said.
