Raetihi rugby jubilee success
BY GAIL IMHOFF Among the 120 players and ex-players who registered for the Raetihi Rugby Football 90th Jubilee on Friday was George West. A sprightly Mr West, who turned 85 on Friday, is the oldest living member of the Club. He started playing rugby for Raetihi in 1923 when he was 16. He then played the game for many years. Mr West, who now lives in Tauranga, is the father and father-in-law of well-known Raetihi identities Iris and Ray Parr. He was given the honour of kicking off for the
main game on Saturday and the second half of
the Golden Oldies match on Sunday. The weekend
was rated a huge success by all who attended and
the weather was perfect throughout the weekend. "The support and response from everyone, community members and ex-members was excellent, just excellent," said Ron Jensen Club President. "There was a great response with exmembers from Auckland to Wellington returning for the weekend." The jubilee celebrations were opened by John Compton on Friday evening. On Saturday . there were several games of rugby with midget and schoolboy games. Ruapehu College played a Raetihi selection, a tough game with Raetihi coming out the winners. The main game of the day was the Raetihi Seniors against Taumarunui Athletic which Raetihi won convincingly. All tickets were sold for the cabaret at the Raetihi School Hall on the Saturday evening. Special guests for the evening were Arch Roebuck, liaison officer for the Wanganui Rugby Football Union, Des Bates, president of the Wanganui Union and Robert Cleaver, president of the Northern Rugby Union. During his speech special guest Colin Meads spoke about Raetihi's past successes and affiliations to the King Country Rugby Football Union. Presentation made Ray Parr made presentations for Best Back, Aaron McCann, Best Forward, Paul Trow, Most Improved Player, Mark Donghi and Best and Fairest Player, Tom Rawiri. Arch Roebuck presented the women's awards for Best Back, Michelle Kui, Best ForTurnpage4
