False lahar at Whakapapa
School holiday skiing at Whakapapa was interrupted on Sunday when the Lahar Early Warning System was activated. The hooting alarm went off at 10.30am sending skiers scurrying out of the valleys onto higher ground. It turned out to be a false alarm but the experience has gladdened Whakapapa Ski Area management. "The response from the public was fantastic" said Dave Mazey, General Manager. "Our Ski Patrol and staff sprang into action immediately, the public responded and most areas were totally clear within five min-
utes. We're 100% confident the system we have developed will work in a real emergency. Today went even smoother than the Civil Defence exercise held earlier in the season. No one seemed to mind the interruption, it added excitement to the school holiday fun," he said. More than 6,000 skiers were on the mountain enjoying the perfect weather and the best snow for years. Department of Conservation staff were to visit the Dome area to find the cause of the false alarm yesterday.
