Silver for bowler

On 30 July three local lady bowlers, B Cochrane, J Foster and N Burrows flew to Brisbane with Playaway Tours escorted by Fred Ellison for three weeks of fun and bowling. The group played bowls at different places on the way to Cairns, taking just ovcr a week to arrive in time for the prestigious Far North Queensland District Bowling Association mixed carnival, sponsored by FAI with prizes to the value of $5000. The tournament consisted of pairs, triples and fours competitions, running from 9-18 of August. Teams made up from the touring party of about -36 bowlers took part in all events. Some teams qualified in all events but the highlight of the trip was qualifying in the fours

post section play of June Foster's team consisting of skip-I Nicolls (Pauanui), 3 June Foster (Ohakune), 2 W Pomeroy (Wanganui) and Lead D Turner (W. Cairns). From about 600 bowlers, these were the only New Zealandcrs to go through to the finals, beating top Australian teams. The New Zealand team played exceptionally good bowls throughout but were defeatcd in the finai by a classy Australian team. Their success didn't ' stop there as two days later a team consisting of Rob Watson (Skip - Hawkes-Bay), June Foster (3), Bernice Coch- j rane (2) and R MacKenzie (lead Manawatu) were runncrsup at a Playaway Tours sponsored tournament at , Manlin Coast. *
