Drinksafe sponsors Ironman
The NZ Winter Games Ironman event, one of the toughest in sport, is to be sponsored by the Drinksafe Project which focuses on health and alcohol. Ironman events have usually been linked to the Liquor Industry. "The arduous nature of the Ironman lends itself well to the promotion of health and sensible use of alcohol. The Over-the-Top Ironman is certainly tough. The first stage is to canoe across
Lake Moawhango, then cycle for 90 kilometres, climb Mt Ruapehu carrying skis, skiing down to Turoa carpark and a final 17 kilometre run finishing at the Ohakune Junction," says John Hannifin, Manager, Alcohol and Drug Services. The Drinksafe Over-the-Top Ironman will signal the beginning of a regional project to raise awareness of health problems linked to alcohol.
"Drinksafe is not antialcohol but is about information which will help people make choices about their own drinking,: says John Hannifin.
"The Drinksafe healthy limits are: 3-4 drinks three or four times a week for men and 2-3 drinks three or four times a week for women. Drinking above
these limits increases the risk to health with effects on the stomach, heart, liver, brain and on babies during pregnancy," says Mr Hannifin.
