Drink for health
Promoting healthy drinking habits is the aim of the Drink Safe campaign of which Michelle Coley is the Waimarino representative. The programme is not about drink-driving as its name might suggest, but about developing good drinking habits that are safe for health reasons. Michelle is presently meeting with various groups in the area to pass on the message, including service clubs, local marae and other Maori groups and various agencies. She plans to set up a Drink Safe display, inviting various related organisations, for Ohakune during the school holidays. Public-
ity about the "Host Responsible" and "Say When " promotion would be included. Much of the programme deals with Host Responsible themes, with approaches made to various licensees to discuss their interpretation of the liquor laws and to encourage good bar management, which includes such things as the provision of good wholesome food and not just the traditional peanuts and chips which encourage heavier drinking. Other things to look at for responsible hosts is more publicity for low or no alcohol drinks, the provision of free coffee and taking more care of patrons when they leave a bar or restaurant.
