Off-mountain adventures
Adventures of an outback kind can be found just a short drive from Ohakune. Ruapehu Outback Adventures is based at the Ruapehu Homestead and offers horse trekking, white water rafting, jet boat tours, and four wheel drive safaris. Horse treks are provided daily for one or
two hour rides depending on the participants, and there are also two or more day treks available. "Our treks go through farmland with beautiful mountain views and native bush, scenic rivers and around small natural lakes," says Sue Allomes, who operates
ROA and the Homestead with her husband Don. White water rafting offered includes trips on the scenic Manganuiateao, flowing off the western flanks of Mt Ruapehu, on the fun and vigorous Tongariro River and rafting at its best on the Rangitikei. "These three rivers of-
fer something for everyone, the best winter ski alternative is a buzz on the Manganuiateao," says Don. The trips leave Ohakune twice daily on closed mountain days. River specialists Ken and Raewyn Howarth operate the Ramanui Jet Boats on the scenic
Whanganui River, taking in the famous Drop Scene and Bridge to Nowhere, at the abandoned Mangapurua settlement. ROA also offers mountain, river and airport transport, and has a wide range of vehicles, including four-wheel drives, for hire.
