Restaurant review - Alpine Wine Bar & Restaurant

BYFOODIETHREE It seemed ages since we had been out for a restaurant meal, so it was with a feeling of gusto we entered Franz's "Aipine Wine Bar and Restaurant", in Clyde Street, Ohakune last week. The fire was blazing, most tables were occupied and there was a feeling of being truly welcome. We chose to sit at our table and have an aperitif instead of going upstairs to the cosy, well stocked bar, as the aroma of all the food had already started to get to us.

Ours was a group of four and we all did justice to everything placed before us. We started with garlic bread and I've always thought Franz's was the best around. The wine list offered a very good selection of both New Zealand and imported wines. Nobilo's Muller Thurgau was our choice. The two misters, P and Three had soup of the day, vegetable soup, which they said was a meal in itself. Mrs P gave in and ordered an entree of crumbed oysters. She said they were beautiful, but have you

ever seen a beautiful oyster? Mr P decided to give his taste buds a treat and had crumbed scallops as his entree - a huge plate full. I love scallops but knew to only have half a serving otherwise I would not have had the opportunity to enjoy the special of the day, chicken breasts with apricot sauce served with broccoli, cauliflower with cheese sauce, carrots and roast potatoes. Mr Three chose the same. It was the most mouth water - ing meal we had eaten for ages. Mrs P selected the

pork fillet with lemon and mustard sauce with vegetables and said the pork simply melted in her mouth, "mmmm". Mr P chose the Hawaian steak and salad. For sweets we could have had pavlova, banana splits, apple strudle, warm carrot cake or one of many other choices but the good old ice cream sundae won out. Tea and coffee followed this perfect meal.
