Helping holiday hand

The weather wasn't kind to the visiting von Hartitzsch family but the locals were when they visited Ohakune last week. The town gave upwards of $1000 worth of holiday help, either in cash or vouchers and goods, when the family came to Ohakune on a skiing holiday. Ohakune publicans Rick and Vicki Lowe read about Mr von Hartitzsch's wish to bring his family on a last chance ski holiday. Mr von Hartitzsch has been diagnosed as having lymphocytic lcukemia and has been told to expect to live for about 1 1 more months. The Lowes and chef Brian Dowsett arranged for the family to stay at the Ohakune Hotel and organised various activities. The two children, Elliot (8) and Lee-Ann (14) have tried skiing before at Whakapapa and thought it was "choice". "You'll have a hard time getting me off them," said Elliot of the day's skiing they were planning at Turoa. "After the Whakapapa trip he was telling me all about it until about 11 o'clock at night," said Mrs von Hartitszch. Although the weather didn't play the game and give them their day's skiing, all is not lost as another holiday offer has been made to the family and they will be staying at Kinloch at Lake Taupo in the school holidays and hope to take in a day's skiing then.
