College youth soccer team defeated easy beats, Wanganui City 3-1 on Saturday, 24 August in the second last game of their season in the Wanganui League. City hadn't won a game all season, but this was no time to relax for the College side. With the win they secured sixth place in the Wanganui Super League, with a chance to move to fifth if they win their next game. Avinesh Sharma had his best game of the season with some excellent running down the left wing. Thirty minutes into the first half, Sharma ran from halfway, beating 4 or 5 City players along the way. With only the keeper to beat, he hit the post. The ball rebounded to Bobby Chand who coolly slotted the ball from the 6 metre line. Late in the first half, some clever one-twos in
the opposition goal area, between John Laurenson and College forward, Glen Journeaux, left Journeaux clear inside the opposition goal area. He blasted it towards goal and the shot defeated the City keeper, for the second goal. College squandered many chances through a lack of first touch control, but coach McCartney scored the decisive goal with 15 minutes to go. He was then taken down in the box by the City keeper. This professional foul should have seen the keeper take an early shower, but the referee's leniency, allowed him to remain on the field. To the coach's great embarrassment, the keeper saved the coach's poorly taken penalty. College play Collegiate at the College field at 2.30 on 31 August. This is the last game of the season. It will be the last game for coach Mc-
Cartney as he is moving down to Waimate dunng the August vacation. He'll be hoping to leave on a winning note, but Collegiate will be a tough prospect, having beaten the College 5-0 in the first round.
Ten netball teams gathered for a tournament in Waiouru last Saturday. The Waiouru One team won and Burnham One team was runner up. It was a knock out tournament, each team had two games each, ten minutes each way. Teams competing were: Burnham one, two and three, Waiouru one, two and three, Drifters, Army Regional team, Navy Regional team, and Tuhoe Totiki, 2 team from Rotorua. "All the teams were evenly matched, so it was good competition. It's also a great way to end the Netball season", said Noeline Masoe, the tournament organiser. Waiouru one and Burnham one met in the final with Waiouru winning 13-11. This was an evenly matched game. Waiouru was down 8-5 at half time and fought back hard to win. Waiouru's centre, Karen Taotahi's speed and skill dictated the pace of the game. Noeline Masoe came on at half time which stabilised the attacking end. Wendy Wallace consistently shot well at GS, with good feeding by Caroline Dawson. Trudy Hullena and Char Waiomio's defence play tightened in the second half when Trudy dropped back onto the GS and Char came out and marked the GA. This upset the Burnham shooters.
