Sports raffle success - tickets still available
More than half of the 1000 new Waimarino Sports Development Fund "Totanum" annual raffle tickets have been sold, and the first prize draw is to take place this weekend. Organisers say there are many people who have considered buying tickets but have not yet obtained them. They say they are confident all can be sold, and remind people that they are aiming to raise money for development for all sports in the Waimarino. If the full 1000 tickets are sold for the full 12 months of the year for the next eight or nine years, $50,000 will be available for Waimarino sports groups annually until about 1999 and from then, about $100,000 annually, depending on interest rates. "This will mean we can say goodbye to endless cake stalls, forever raising money for sports," said committee member Glyn Hubbard. He said he or secretary Cathy McLean could be contacted if people want a ticket (58 507 or 54 636 respectively) or their own sports organisers. Tickets will continue to be sold after the start of the weekly draws, said Glyn. "As people drop out, or leave the area, we will sell the tickets to others to replace them," he said. As a measure of the depth of support for the idea of the Sports Development Fund, there are people who have changed their wills to mention the Fund, said organisers.
