Heaviest College defeat
Recent heavy rain has turned the College field into a quagmire and ruined any hope of College continuing its recent good form against top of the table Cosmos, going down in their heaviest defeat (91) of the season at home.
The Wanganui players were greeted by rain, hail, sleet snow lip and hand-numbing cold and sunshine all within the one half. The cold continued into the second half. When the rain had finished the college field was covered by ankle deep mud, well fertilised topsoil and hundreds of carrots washed off the adjacent carrot field. The flotsam carrots made slide tackles difficult and dangerous, to say the least! A stray carrot in the wrong place could well have ended promising careers. The college team might well have lost the game but 26 players, a few hardy spectators and
the referee now have enough carrots to last them well into next soccer season... a real bonus for the visiting team and a little bit of consolation for the local side after such a heavy defeat. It was a game the College team would rather forget, but one that they could have had a good chance of winning had the conditions been less like the infamous All Black/Scotland test at Eden Park. Next week, the college are playing Wanganui City in Wanganui East's Wembley park at 2.30 on pitch no. 6. Spectators and supporters are welcome, with entry to the grounds costing $2 (or a bag of carrots!).
