From page 3 gency from DoC and RAL's point of view started with the evacuation, then moved into stabilisation of the situation. He said all possible contingencics could not be covered but that they aimed to assess the potential problem areas and make sure the necessary resources were available to deal with whatever situation faced them. With Tuesday's scenario there would be 1300 people unable to get off the mountain but emergency accommodation was available with the large number of club lodges. Mr Montgomery said they could be looked after on the field for about 24 hours. He said the Army could be called to erect an emergency bridge for evacuation off the mountain, helicopters could be used, or emergency staff could set up a supply line to the field using flying foxes and the like. The exercise was part of "Nga Puia - Volcanoes" which is a Civil Defence public awareness campaign being run through July 1991-June 1992.
