Droving debate

The number of stock driven by one person is not important when looking at safety, says Ruapehu Councillor Bill Penny, it's how they are handled. Ruapehu councillors discussed the issue at their last full council meeting, when a review of by-laws was on the agenda. Limits on the numbers of stock were put at 1500 sheep, but Cr Penny said an experienced drover could handle 3000. "I don't think 1500 is too far out - you need someone in front warning people for a start." said Cr Doug Bennett. "You need about 3000 sheep just to slow the traffic down," chipped in Cr Joe Murphy. After some discussion Cr Turley said "We've only established one thing - Cr Penny has better dogs than Cr Benett!" (both are farmers). The council decided to alter the clause to read that stock must be driven in a manner so as not to cause a danger to other road users and reference to numbers of stock were deleted.
