Turoa has CD plan
Turoa does have a civil defence disaster evacuation plan. Following the recent statement by Ruapehu civil defence officer Karen Ngatai that Turoa may not have had an evacuation plan, Turoa Ski Resort general manager Angus Grimwade told the Bulletin there is most definitely a plan lodged with the Department of Conservation, as is laid down under the terms of the company's concession to operate in the national park. He said the plan is in need of updating but
that this work has been in hand for some time. "We have been working on updating the plan in consultation with the Department of Conservation, independently of the council civil defence officer," said Mr Grimwade. He said he would be attending today's Whakapapa lahar waming system exercise to see how their system is set up to operate, and would discuss various aspects with them on possible disaster scenarios. Mr Grimwade said it was impossible to
predict every potential for civil defence disaster but that he was confident the resources and staff available on the field would be able to cope with ah emergency situation. He said there were also the resources available off the mountain that could be summoned to help in an emergency. Turoa's main threats were from a lahar, eruption, disastrous avalanche and earthquake, said Mr Grimwade.
