If you don't know the difference electricity has made to the Turoa Ski Resort, take a flying leap.
npact of connecting the Turoa Ski Resort to the grid is hard to believe. Everything from soup to snow has improved. And thaf s just the beginning. Early 1991 saw a buzz of activity on Ruapehu's scoriacovered slopes. Staff from King Country Energy and Turoa carefully laid the cable and positioned the sdc transformers. With the connection came many changes. Most noticeable was the silence. Not only did the newly installed electric generators eliminate the potential problems of diesel spills and fumes, they also transformed the ski lift areas into peaceful environments. A phenomenon previously unheard of at Turoa. Electrification has also enabled Turoa to install an efficient computerised ticketing system, and to dramatic-
ally expand their ski hire facilities. Extra snowmaking is now possible and the number of ski lifts is soon to increase. With more electricity available, the mountain cafes will be able to offer a wider range of food and beverages. But to really experience the change at Turoa, clip on your skis and take a flying leap. When you land, you'll appreciate one of the many differences electricity is making to the commercial success of New Zealand tourism. ELECTRZCmr
