Rural number systems studied

Further investigation work into the Ruapehu District's future rural property numbering system is to be carried out, following discussion at the recent full council meeting. The council was recommended to accept the RAPID numbering system, which is based on distance from the start of rural roads. But Waimarino councillors were keen to retain the system that is already in place in that part of the district. During discussion it became evident there were advantages with both systems. The RAPID system (or Brazilian system) does not require the use of a map, while die present Waimarino system sees each property in the whole Wanganui emergency services area assigned a unique number. This meant there was no potential for confusion over road names, said Cr Bill Peach.
