Recycling threat
The skids were very nearly put under the fledgling council plastics recycling programme, which is to cost just 0.065 per cent of the council's annual budget, at the council meeting of 19 July. Schools should be able to deliver the collected
plastics to the depot the council was setting aside saving the council the expense, said Cr Ellen Gould It was moved that $5100 set aside for the project be deleted from the budget. Cr Kirton said he was disappointed at the comments against the scheme, saying the council had to share some of the responsibility for moving towards recycling. He said there was some gain for council in that the lifespan of the council's tips would be increased. Cr Bill Peach said PTAs were too busy to worry about delivering bulky plastic bales and it could mount up, leading to staff discouraging children from collecting the plastic. The motion was lost, with the majority agreeing the scheme should be tried for at least one year.
