USA Army visit

BY

JO

HOWIE

The Honourable Edward Derwinski, the American Secretary of Veterans Affairs is the first United States Cabinet minister to make an official visit to New Zealand since 1984. This visit was seen as a positive sign in the relationship between the two countries, but Mr Derwinski has avoided discussion on the Anzus rift. His main objective during his visit has been centred on next year's plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of important World War 2 Pacific battles such as Guadalcanal and Mid-

way. Mr Derwinski, his wife Bonnie, and seven others from Intemal Affairs, passed through Waiouru on Friday for about four hours as part of their New Zealand tour. He started by inspecting a 50 man guard outside the museum, then he was escorted through the museum by Major Gary Clayton, the museum director. After lunch at the Officers Mess, he listened to presentations on army clothing and equipment, ration packs, and weapons. His party left mid afternoon for a weekend at Huka Lodge Taupo.
