Betty Carrick, the Bendon league regional coaching netball co-or-dinator visited Waiouru and Taihape last week. Being an ex school teacher and a netball regional representative, she is well qualified to be one of five full time Bendon netball coaches in New Zealand. She is responsible for 29 associations and 9 unions. Mrs Carrick and the four other netball co-ordinators meet three times a year with Lois Muir, the national netball coaching director. They then reassess netball weaknesses throughout New Zealand and re-direct new aims and objectives for netball players. This includes updating ball games and exercises designed to improve problem areas. "It's encouraging to see an improvement in standards in all areas of the game," said Mrs Carrick. "It's important primary school pupils learn good basic skills. This provides a good foundation for the game. The children are becoming more versatile and are able to play all positions."
She visited the Waiouru primary school netball players during their lunch hour to teach different ball games to strengthen their basic skills, such as attack and defence, receiving and passing the ball. and agility and movement exercises. A more advanced programme was organised for senior
Waiouru and Taihape players held in Taihape. The theme of the night was to find space and successfully receive the ball and direct the pass to another team member. "Netball is like a game of cat and mouse, you must outwit your opponent in order to win," she said.
