Waiouru vs Marist Waiouru Senior rugby team beat Marist by 1910 on Saturday. Marist started the game with plenty of fire but were unable to sustain it. The first half was evenly shared in terms of opportunities but was marred by a pathetic fight involving many players. Once they all settled down it became an exciting game to watch. The Waiouru forwards were dominant in the lineouts and loose play. Outstanding lock Jones was rewarded with an excellent forwards -rush try. The Waiouru backs always appeared dangerous when they spun the ball wide and this tended to extend the larger but slower Marist pack. Marist had a superior scrum which always spoiled the Waiouru put-in. Waiouru will need to work on their scrum to at least guarantee their ball. Waiouru scored three tries to none and fullback Brian Clarke was in excellent form kicking two long range penalties and a conversion. For Waiouru forwards Jones, Hickmont and Sullivan had strong games and in the backs standin halfback Tunui, Paul and Mete had solid games. Raetihi vs Huia In a dour, but absorbing game Huia defeated Raetihi by 26 points to 12 on Saturday. The game was close until the last 20 minutes as Huia ran in three tries. The halftime score was 8-6 to Huia. Raetihi matched, and at times bettered Huia in the tight but the Huia loose forwards, led by the Wanganui captain Kerry Whale and assisted by Neil Bell and Kellick Harding were too fast and skilled for Raetihi. Stuart Ngatai was the pick of the Raetihi forwards but he was well supported by Tom Rawiri, Tony Bird and Paul Trow. Mike Gordon played well but a
lack of control at times spoilt his efforts. The Huia backs were accomplished and looked dangerous whenever they received the ball. A lot of pace out wide kept Raetihi under pressure throughout the game. Huia backs to stand out were 1st five Kelvin Chase and wingers David Kereti and Kylie Chase. Lee Tumbull was accomplished at fullback even though his kicking was astray. Aaron McCann, who played at second five was the pick of the Raetihi backs. Brendon Kavanagh played his usual efficient game at halfback and lost nothing when compared to Huia's Wanganui representative Thomas Scott. Cayton Te Moana played well in the first half when Raetihi had a territorial advantage. Wayne Te Huia had a good game at fullback and kicked three good goals from three attempts. Scorers for Huia: Tries; David Kereti, Kylie Chase, Kohatu Chase, Victor Chase, Neil Bell, Lee Turnbull, a conversion, Lee Turnbull. Raetihi, Try; Stuart Ngatai, Wayne Te Hunia - 2 penalties and a conversion. Ohakune - Karioi vs Wanganui Boys College and Old Boys. By Lineout Ohakune-Karioi coach Graham Pike was pleased with the performance of his team when they beat the Wanganui team 30-6 on Saturday at Rochfort Park. The forwards were outstanding in ther - tactics on the day and so were Anthony Callahan and Jasen Hulena who appear to thrive on more disciplined rugby, indicating good coaching in their agegroup rugby. Individul play started to sneak back in when the points started
coming. Brent Gowler was always first to the loose ball and the Wills brothers appear to thrive on the stand-off tactics which have become part of the local team's game. The tight five are going as one unit and Frank Matinga is now top value in the team. Lochlan Harding entered the backline at pace and created a lot of damge when entereing the line. The Boys College and old Boys played a pretty even encounter in the first half until the local team wore them out and took over in the second half. Anthony Callaghan became player of the day for his touch finders and general all round play. Points: OhakuneKarioi, Lochlan Harding, Grant Barratt, Brendon Wilson. Tries- Harding 3 conversions and 4 penalties. BC & OB Mike Paul 2 penalties. Saturday morning rugby by lineout Hundreds of Primary school age boys and one or two girls converged on the Ohakune Primary School to play some excellent rugby on Saturday morning. Teams came from Taupo, Waiouru, Taihape and Raetihi, and were hosted by Ohakune. There were many evenly matched games and some where one team was a bit stronger than the other. The Taihape Intermediate team gave their Waiouru, Ohakune and Raetihi oppositions a tough time. Raetihi dominated in the senior level with the female members of the team playing starring roles. The round robin tournament is played in each town every fortnight and brings out hundreds of parents as well, thus providing great entertainment for all.
