New Junction eatery already popular
PROFILE
Advertorial
Ruapehu's newest restaurant and bar is already a favourite with many people, having been opened just a few short weeks ago. "The Snowrock" Restaurant & Bar exists thanks to the efforts of proprietors Steve Tier and Rodger Bransgrove who decided, after working for other people for their working life up to date, they wanted to do it their way. Steve is the man behind the food which is already creating a large following. Many diners have followed him to the Rock knowing his reputation from his work in other local restaurants over past ski seasons. He has worked at the Powderkeg, Nobby's Restaurant when operated by Nobby Clark and before that worked in the Palmerston North restaurants Michael Joles, Sheraton McKenzie's and the Cork & Fork. He also has a diverse experience in the restaurant trade in Australia having worked in Byron Bay and Surfers' Par-
adise. His chef's experience ads up to more than 15 years. Snowrock's cuisine is offered a la carte and includes Italian, French and other European dishes and Kiwi styles. Changes are made almost daily to the menu and included in the entrees is chicken and Camembert with a Marsala sauce, lobster salad, and spinach and cheese in filo pastry. Mains include thunder with lemon sauce, "Veal Snowrock" and, when available, lobster. Steve and Rodger say the Snowrock is overdue. "We've had three ski seasons in this town and we know what the locals and the visitors like," said Steve. "What we've got here is good food, and a warm, friendly, relaxing atmosphere " "The season is looking good judging from the first few weeks - we're really looking forward to it," said Roger. The pair say they are here for the long term
and want to support other local business. "Thanks to Waimarino Wines, we can offer a great wine list," said Rodger. "And we're offering good value across the bar. Here, you can still buy a glass of beer for $2.50." Rodger, who takes on running the bar, has worked three ski seasons in Ohakune, including one at Margaritta's and the Ohakune Hotel. A feature of the bar is a 1920's style dentist's chair which comes in handy for the Tequila Layback drink, which judging by the photos is good for saving on glass washing as well as providing entertainment for spectators! The Snowrock also has a takeaway bar attached, offering food at all hours. The takeaway menu is a little different to most with pasta and lasagna available as well as veal, roasts - in fact "everything" - says Steve. Along with breakfasts "there will always be food available" at Snowrock.
