New rugby league team going strong
The Waimarino Rugby League Club are doing well On 4 May a home game was played at the recreational ground which saw massive support for Waimarino. Their opponents Kia Ora never seemed to play the game which Waimarino won. On 11 May they played Fielding losing 28-24 with four tries disallowed. On 18 May they went to Marton and showing excellent skills they lead 22-8 at half-time. Marton underestimated Waimarino and came back playing with experience and determination. Waimarino then started to lack play but with their own selfmotivation they pulled together winning 32-22. Waimarino scorers, R Tihema 2, J Heams 1, S Metekingi 1, G Hinana 1, S Bu l.R Tihema converted 5. POD J Hipango. On 25 May they travelled to Waiouru to play Tainui. Their determination payed off with P Todd scoring an excellent runaway try in the first ten minutes, then scoring the next two with Riwaru Tihema converting 2. On 8 June they played Linton who showed how
experience can pay off, with Waimarino always being on defence. Linton won 26-6. Waimarino try scorer J Hearns 1 Conversion R Tihema. Sunday saw a bus load of supporters travelling with the players to Kaitoke. The game was being played at 1 o'clock, with no official referee the game went ahead where both teams were at a disadvantage. Kaitoke won 46-26. Last Saturday was another home game this time against Fielding who are leading the competition with Linton. Waimarino have now got their own uniform which was seen for the first time when they played Fielding. The match was a superb game of league. Again no official referee was there, but Waimarino won 14-6. POD G Hinana Jnr. Saturday they travelled to Palmerston North to play Kia Ora and won 56-nil. Waimarino would like to thank the Waiouru league club for allowing them to use their jerseys and for their support. They also thank the Waimarino Squash club, Ohakune Shoes, Ritz Tearooms, Dempsey buses, Hair Profile, Clowns and to everyone who has contributed to the club. Peirre Todd was selected for the Manawatu under 19's and Duncan Metekingi Jnr was in trials for the Manawatu under 15's. Both are looking to represent New Zealand in the future.
