Rubbish contract tightened
Waimarino Community Board members talked rubbish at their meeting last week - discussing the impact of the new rubbish tenders on services in Raetihi and Ohakune, which were recently let. The board heard that while the conditions of the contract had not changed, the new contractor would not be carrying out a number of the tasks that the previous contractor performed, such as picking up bags other than the Kleensak variety, boxes, and other containers. The contractor would also not be picking up rubbish from the rear of commercial premises. Southern area engineer told the Board the conditions were part of the contract, and that the previous contractor had carried out the extra services as a courtesy. They were not obliged to pick up such rubbish. Later, the board heard
that it was the council's newly formed company that had won the contract. Some- board members expressed concern at what would happen in the case of skier's chalets, where people put rubbish out in a vari-
ety of containers, then leave town. The board discussed various difficulties commercial operators would be faced with, and finally recommended that council staff consult with firms to try to overcome individual dif-
, ficulties that might be encountered. Mayor Garrick , Workman said the council was being urged to contract out as much work as possible to keep rates down, and tightening of such contracts was a consequence of that.
