Retain Raetihi Doctor's house says board
Opinion on the future of the Raetihi doctor's house was split during discussion at the recent Waimarino Community Board meeting. The property, owned by the council, is one of several being considered for sale. (See separate story). The present Raetihi doctor has established a surgery in Seddon Street and lives in other accommodation. The house and surgery was originally bought by council, with funds raised by the community, to offer to prospective doctors to try to attract them to the town. But the property is expensive to maintain, the board heard, and it was suggested that the property be sold and the money put into a special fund to purchase a residence at some later date if and when necessary. But member Bill Peach and others felt they should had a house always readily available. "You don't know when you are going to need it," said Mr Peach, "It could be in two years, two weeks or two days." He said if the property were sold another should be bought immediately so that it could be available immediately.
