Ruapehu's league champions

The Ruapehu District has a champion rugby league team and not many people know about it. The Bobcats, Waiouru's premier rugby league team maintained their unbeaten record on Saturday with a 36-16 win over Massey, one of the other top teams in the Manawatu premier grade. Bobcats were clearly the better team but had to work for the win. When Massey were permitted to spin the ball wide they scored. But Waiouru were able to tighten up and pressure

took its toll allowing Waiouru to score 12 tries, none of which were converted. Team captain Jack Millford leads by example to motivate a skilful team, which is coached by Wayne Longley, a long time stalwart of the club. The club has proved to be an important community organisation as well as a successful sports club. It is important to the community because until recent years the keen rugby league players had no nearby team to play for. Now this relatively new club fields a premier re-

serve under 15, 13, 11, 9 and 7 year old teams. Six of the premier team have played for the New Zealand Army team: J Milford, B Hemopo, J Rogers, J Puketapu, J Walker and J Archer.

Also six juniors have made the Manawatu under 19 representative team: Stan Walker, Brian Wanoa, Michael Howell, Jodi Looker, Grassay Shaw and Pierre Todd.
