College soccer triumph

Ruapehu College maintain their 7th place in the league, after their win against hightly placed City Old Guns 10 on the 22nd June. The College youth team has learnt a lot since going down to the same team in the last round, 1-4. The local side are certainly improving and can be proud of their first win against a senior side. Up until now, the college's wins have been against school sides in the Wanganui League. College used the same tactics that saw them match it with a senior side last week. Both sides had many chances, with coach John McCartney clearing a point

blank shot off his own line and college forward Yannis Pot breaking through the opposition defense on a number of occasions and desperation tackles robbing him of clearcut chances. The winning goal came after a period of sustained pressure by the college in the second half. Geoff Pitts linked in well with midfielder John Laurenson who crossed the ball low across the Old Guns penalty area. Aeneas O'Sullivan had a decoy shot, which left Bobby Chand in perfect position to hammer home the winner. With a win under their belt at the beginning of the second round and

their commitment to a winning formula and tactics College are in good heart for their game against top team in the league, High School Old Boys. This week College travel away to Wanganui. Ohakune darts club On Wednesday 19 July there was a good turn out for the darts evening. Neil Cranston had the highest start at 129, Colin Cranston had the highest finish at 98 and Greg Windle had the highest score at 83. Overall winner was Greg Windle followed by Doof Robinson. John Kennedy won the meat raffle.
