Top snow for skiing start-up
Great snow and great skiing at the T Bar level and down to Mid Station on the Giant Chair at Turoa greeted skiers on Saturday, once they had got over the hurdle of getting up the mountain road. Slick conditions on the road and inexperienced drivers meant long delays for many people getting up to the slopes, with many people needing assistance in getting past the hairpin up to Massey Flat. About 2000 people visited Turoa on Satur-
day of their first weekend of the 1991 season, but high winds kept the field shut on Sunday. Whakapapa had about 500 visitors, mostly at Happy Valley on Saturday. The field needs more snow before the upper fields open. Turoa lost some snow due to the rain that fell yesterday morning, said mountain manager Grant McMasters, but they gained more than they lost when snow fell later in the day and last night. He said about 20cm of new snow fell on the upper field and about 10cm at the base area.
