A liftie's life is easier with power

Working on the lifts on Turoa should be easier now they run on electricity, says Mountain manager Grant McMasters. He said the obvious improvements will be the easier maintenance, But this will free the lifties up to work on other areas more and quicker. De-icing work at night will now be carried out, with night staff doing the rounds, running the motors to 'crack the

lifts', that is, to break up ice that is starting to build up on the battery wheels. It won't mean the end of de-icing but it will give the crews a head start in the morning which means all lifts operating earlier some mornings. All the diesel motors will remain in the drive stations, apart from the Jumbo T Bar. This will give the skifield back up so in the event of power failure the skifield could still be operated as normal.
