Matiu Mareikura is congratulated by Ruapehu Mayor Garrick Workman on receiving the 1990 medal, in recognition for his work as chairman of the Waimarino 1990 Committee last year. The medal, presented to just a few New Zealanders, was accompanied by a certificate of gratitude signed by Queen Elizabeth. 1990 Committee members, friends and relatives joined Mr Mareikura in celebrating the occassion at a dinner at the Mangarongo Marae last Thursday. Mr Mareikura thanked the other members of the 1990 Committee and accepted the medal on behalf of all the people of the Waimarino.
