Snow plays havoc with roads

Treacherous conditions caused by snowfalls in the Waimarino and surrounds cut off the area for much of yesterday morning. The Desert Road and SH1 between Waiouru and Taihape, State Highway 49 between Waiouru and Ohakune and between Ohakune and National Park, and SH 3 on the Parapara were all closed until about 10am yesterday due to the heavy snowfalls and islippery conditions. Five trucks which lost control blocked the Parapara Highway at Houton's Hill until about 10.30am, and a truck which had jackknifed blocked SH3 at Berry's Cutting south of Horopito until about the same time. The road to National Park was opened about 11.30am, but the Desert Road was still closed at the time the Bulletin went to print. More bad weather was forecast for last night. Ruapehu College and Ohakune Primary School were closed yesterday due to a power cut which upset the boilers switching on. Most other schools were open but transport problems kept many children at home.
