Rates story challenged

• I am amazed that you can print such MISLEADING headlines as in the Issue for 14 May, "RATES NOT UP" I have just heard that the charges on our Ski Club are estimated to rise by about $2000 and the Uniform Annual Charge is to RISE for all of us in the Ruapehu District by $10, this is not much but added to the increase in charges over the last few years, and we in Raurimu still cannot get any proper work done. My rates have risen by 1100 per cent since 1986 and we have been ignored by the council, promises yes but nothing, they did come to clear a stream, after 10 years of pleading, and dug it up in the wrong place which is typical of work done by the council. I spend a lot of my time doing work the council should and has promised to do but will not do, our cemetery has not been touched in 15 years to my knowledge, other than the painting of the fence, I have spent many hours clearing and in the past cannot even get the cost of materials back from the voted money and you say that most SPECIAL REQUEST WORK has been accommodated in the budget. Maybe, but for us nothing has been done, it could be in the BUDGET but this means very little if no work is done, it was only by accident I have found out that there is some money voted (ie in budget) for the cemetery they have kept it very quiet even with all my requests for funds.

Long round Walk • Last weekend I had the opportunity to visit Ohakune. I had my two small sons with me, aged 3 and 6.

On looking around the township we discovered a bush walk at the Jubilee Park. An arrow pointed to a track saying ' Round Walk'. I thought this was a great idea, expecting to finish up where I started off. We took the walk and ended up beside a road. As I hadn't been to the area before I had no idea where I was and there were no further signposts to tell me.My sense of direction is not magnificent but I headed in what I thought to be the right direction. It tumed out it was, but I had to knock on a residents door to make sure. My point is I expected a 'Round Walk' to take us back to where we started, it didn't! We did enjoy our walk however and our weekend.

Games Missing • I have just picked up the 1991 Turoa Skificld Information and travel map brochure which contains a programme of events scheduled for the Turoa Skifield during the coming season. I note the programme contains details of such events as 'Red Nose Day' (16 August), 'Dummie Downhill' (17 August), Cadbury Moro Yetis birthday party' (8 September), and 'Free Ski Wee Kids Holiday Programme' (31 August14 September) to name a few. Nowhere, either in the programme nor elsewhere in the brochure, is there any mention whatsoever of what will be the major event on and around Mt Ruapehu this year: the New Zealand Winter Games to be held from 15

September to 5 October. I wonder why?

CoIIege netball praise • Having been an avid netball player for many years, I feel that the talent of our younger players is exceptional. More so at College level where the younger players and their skills are tested every weekend against their senior rivals. Regardless of who they are pitted against, they are out there giving their all for their chosen sport. I congratulate these players and their coaches. , Last Saturday I was on the sideline to watch the game played between second place-getters, at this stage, College 1, and Waiouru 3. Obviously the break during the holidays was enough to allow the otherwise sharp game of College to be played at a slower pace. These younger players were stretched to their fullest at times, and it wasn't until the second half did the College team gel. With Coral Rahi returning to her normal position of goal attack the team worked with a more positive attitude. This allowed the Waiouru team to begin their attack. The whistle sounded with a victory to College 1 by one goal. It was good to see the experience of their goal keeper Awhina Edwards, was being used to help her younger players, at her end of the court. I shall be watching the Qollege teams with interest until the end of the season. I wish all the teams well for the second round starting on the 15 June.
