Tongariro compensation claim supported
At its recent meeting the Tongariro/Taupo Conservation Board expressed its support for adequate compensation of the owners of "Access 10", an access road to the Tongariro River which is currently under threat of closure to the public. "This situation is the result of mistakes made in the past," said Acting Chairman John Ryan.
"and the mistakes rr.ust not be compounded. The board acknowlcdges fully the Rotoaira Forcst Trust's right to compensation." Howcvcr the board also supported the Department of Conservation in the principle of not paying for access. It was appropriate that a fee should be charged for any commercial operations run on the land, but the Crown and the public should not be subject to such costs for general access. Mr Ryan reinforced the need to find an equitable solution. He said the board hoped the issue would be looked at in the board context by Government and that an agency would be accorded in view of the issue's importance to the public and the tourist industry.
