Ohakune-Karioi vs Wanganui Counties

BY

LINEOUT

Ohakune-Karioi went as well as could be expected when they were beaten 12-6 at rugby on Saturday by last years champion side Wanganui Counties. The team seemed lethargic in the first quarter. Wanganui-Counties were instructed to pass the ball out wide and run it at the local team. It is to Ohakune-Karioi's credit that they never gave up, eventually gaining control in many phases of the game. However it was already too late, the Wanganui team had already taken the lead in the first quarter and towards the end of the first half lead by 12 points with scores to Dion Maua, Clive Edmonds and Gerard Albert. Lachlan Harding slotted over a penalty before half time for Ohakune-Karioi. After the turn around . the Wanganui Counties first five failed to follow instructions and on several occasions would kick the ball rather than run it. This proved to be

the wrong option at times because fullback Lachlan Harding, Richard Mathews and others covered well. The Ohakune front row went much better this week with Brendon Wills going for a tighhead and winning it against his representative opponent. Older brother Michael had good scrumaging techniques as well and Richard Lindsay and Brain Bailey went well in the locking department. Bailey led by example and was well supported by Richard Mathews who was rewarded with the player of the day. In the local back line Brendon Wilson played an improved game and Steve Vine was aggressive as ever. Harding kicked a penalty in the last few minutes of the game. Waimarino Darts It was good to see all dart players at the Waimarino Club for the first game of the season a round robin competition. Highest start; Daniel Williams and Jim Pearce both had 100 with Jim winning the play off by three points. Lyn Drinkwater with 164 won the highest score by a mile. The highest finish went to Greg Windle with 98. and the overall winner was Jim Pearce. Booby prize went to Nancy Parata (not again) what the heck. Darts is on Tuesday at 7.30.
