Top three Scouts

The Ohakune Scout Troop is the only one to have the distinction of having three scouts holding the Chief Scout Award simultaneously in the Rangitane area. This area extends from Horowhenua, Wairarapa, Manawatu, Fielding, Wanganui, Rangtikei and up to the Waimarino. The holders of this, the highest award obtainable in Scouts, are Warwick Hays, Avinesh Sharma and Malcolm Chan. The award is gained by the Scouts after years of leadership training, community work and the development of Scouting and Tife* skills that will assist their progress towards their next goals, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and ultimately to Queen's Scout. Scout changes A long awaited change is currently underway within the Scouting movemenf, said Ohakune Scout leader

Grant Hays. The changes are taking the Association beyond Baden Powell's ideas of 80 years ago and coming up with "Scouting for the '90s", said Mr Hays. "The old concepts of Scouts only tying knots and doing 'Bob-a job' are gone. Programmes are designed to be enjoyable and satisfying for all participants," he said. "It must be fun, it must be challenging and it must provide satisfaction while reflecting the many cultures of New Zealand." Last year girls were

accepted into Ohakune Scouts and they have recently started in cubs, which is for boys and girls aged from 8 to 10 1/2, while Scouts caters for up to 15 years. Local organisers hope to start a Venturer Unit soon which will be for both sexes from 15 to 18, where through adventurous activities they can develop co-opera-tion, teamwork, selfconfidence and leadership skills. Enquiries about Cubs can be directed to Warren Swain (58 476 and Scouts or Venturers to Grant Hays (58 297)
